Mother of Exiles is a setting of Emma Lazarus’ famous sonnet The New Colossus, which is inscribed on the Statue of Liberty. The phrase “Mother of Exiles”, appearing in the middle of the poem, has been translated into sixteen different languages which have been layered in vocal lines of increasing rhythmic complexity. The music contrasts sections of taut dissonance with expansive phrases of harmonious warmth. Mother of Exiles is an excellent vehicle for high school, college and professional choirs seeking an anthem of compassion in times of need.
