This piece was composed in collaboration with NW multi-media artist Susan Barnes, who created a painting with the same title. After hearing about the circumstances that moved Ms. Barnes to paint this picture, I was inspired by the spiritual qualities in her story and in the image. Ideally, the music would be heard while viewing the painting. This video displays a gradual reveal of the painting which is timed to a performance of the music that took place in Portland, Oregon on March 8, 2026 in celebration of International Women’s Day.
To me, the painting “In Touch” is a visual reflection about grieving a deep loss after a lifetime of joyfully shared love. The music begins at the bottom of the painting, where darkness reigns. There is little to distinguish one shape, one moment, or one note from another. As your gaze moves slowly upwards, your emotions, however murky, are seeking movement—perhaps some resolution. Here and there, flashes of light appear, expanding your view. You look higher, seeing the essence of your loved one in the light. They are everywhere, in all the realms of nature. They are touching you.
